El Refuerzo on Chacabucco is rated 4 of 5 on TripAdvisor and ranked #314 of 3902 restaurants in Buenos Aires, but of course I'm not talking about that one!
Yesterday I had a lovely afternoon out with some visitors exploring the neighbourhoods of San Telmo, La Boca and Baraccas and sent them off armed with recommendations for dinner etc.
As it turned out, my business meeting wasn't to be, (no shows when coordinating things with Porteños is normal, and it even happens to students at university...). So, a quick moment later I had caught them up having a beer or two at Bierlife. Shortly after, I heard that my wife was enjoying a 'girls night' with friends so I was pleased to be able to accompany the guys to dinner.
The Place:El Refuerzo is tiny tiny, so it was no surprise when they told me it would be an hours wait, but kindly reminded me that El Refuerzo - Proviciones was just around the corner, and that is where we went.
The Place:El Refuerzo - Proviciones. Again,tiny tiny tiny but same good onda and after a reshuffle of tables and chairs our table for five was set.
The problem, CASH ONLY. The other problem, the two ATM machines in San Telmo are 6-8 blocks apart. This is a problem as lots of travellers (mostly from USofA), can get their cash out via GALICIA bank. So a quick trip up the road and back after ordering food and wine for the cash and we were sorted. Understandably this cash only is common in a city where the hiperinflation causes prices to rise daily and so the expense of paying the banks service charges just isn't justifyable. So we walked out, then came back with the cash.
The Food:LOTS of specials, however as we were arriving a bit later there were only two steaks left in the house, which Rob and Fi 'baggsed', this was not a problem though as Jack was happy to go vegetarian for the night to accompany the new and recent vegetable avocate Sam, I had the sea-shell pasta with huge tender juicy chunks of meat.
All in all, nice meals with the steaks even be accompanyed with some vegetsbles, the steak they said would have got a 8-9 if only it wasn't slightly more cooked than they had expected. Good vege friendly dishes and both of these restaurants do pretty descent salads! This is huge when for most places here a salad is tomato onions and lettuce (with optional salt pepper,oil etc).
Topped off with lovely tip-inducing gestures of sweets and grappa
