Yet what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in location. Phantom Ranch sits on the floor of the Grand Canyon. It's nestled beside Bright Angel Creek. It's the only accommodation below the Canyon rim. It's only reachable by mule, foot and raft. Designed by fame architect Mary E. J. Colter and opened in 1922, Phantom Ranch is built of wood and stone. It has 11 rustic cabins and two dormitories, one for women and one for men. Meals are served family style. Showers are communal. Family Travel Tips: Phantom Ranch is operated by Xanterra. Reservations can be made 13 months in advance. The meals are hearty but hardly top quality. Duffel is service is available at an extra charge.  Old Faithful Inn is the most popular hotel in Yellowstone National Park. Not only is this log hotel a historic landmark, it's just steps from Old Faithful Geyser. But before you get entangled in turn-of-the-century romance and practical location take note of the following. The rustic charm of the lobby doesn't apply to the rooms. Most of guestrooms at this historic inn are located in a modern addition. The ' Old House ' Roman mid-range rooms and rooms without a bath-are truly basic. The high-range rooms are 3-star motel. You don't need to spend the night to take it all in. Family Travel Tips: Reservations are required at the Dinning Room. Old Faithful Inn is open early May though mid-October.
